January 6, 2021-A Far Greater Catastrophe than 9/11

The astounding events that took place in Washington D.C. yesterday, January 6, 2021 have dealt a far more devastating blow to the United States of America than the bloody attacks of 9/1.more than twenty years ago.

The number of deaths and physical destruction, of course, do not compare. But while Bin Laden’s followers managed to topple the twin towers, damage a portion of the Pentagon, and kill more than 3,000 people, what the insurgents and their allies in Washington accomplished was a horrific—perhaps ultimately fatal--wound to the very heart of American  Democracy

They accomplished this through a two-pronged attack. First, the screaming mobs who overwhelmed the thin ranks of police, invading the Capitol, ransacking offices, forcing terrified legislators to postpone certifying a new president, and instead cower under their seats or in blockaded offices, some fearfully texting loved ones as if they were panicked students targeted by one of the crazed shooters who have invaded America’s schools over the past few years. The mob had also been egged on by former New York Mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, who ironically made his name as a supposedly heroic leader in the aftermath of 9/11. Yesterday he conspired in a far more serious blow against America.

But while the wide-eyed, painted and tattooed insurgents took selfies as they rampaged through the Capitol, they had other far more powerful allies also working to demolish America’s democratic traditions from the inside: more than 130 Republican members of the House and at least eight American senators –most of them millionaires, two of them Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, who actually clerked for the Supreme Court, parroting patently false charge that Trump had been robbed of victory—though those charges had been dismissed by more than forty different judges over the past few weeks.  They turned what should have been a solemn ritual of American democracy—validating the election of the victorious presidential president---into a farce.

Despite the terrible damage of the 9/11 attacks, new soaring structures now stand again at the site of the World Trade Centre, the damaged outer corridor of the `Pentagon was repaired long ago, but does anyone think that the shameful, nightmarish spectacle that played out in the U.S. Capitol that was shown around the world---the violence of the mob,  the craven cynicism of hundreds of American legislators--does anyone think those acts will not have consequences that will reverberate in America’s shattered political system for years? Indeed, their impact may never be reversed.

The most outrageous fact, however, is that the leader behind yesterday’s terrorist attack was not some fire-breathing foreign religious extremist obsessed with hatred of the United States, but the President of the United States himself. For years, he has been inciting his followers to violence, as he did again yesterday, then sat in the White House, tweeting encouragement to those domestic terrorists until he finally agreed—after frantic pleas by his own staff—to calm the water--for the time being. `’Go home,” he said, “We love you,”.

The bottom line-- in just four years, Donald Trump and his enablers have wreaked far more damage on America, than Osama Bin Laden and his minions would ever have dreamed of achieving.  At best, the U.S. will take many years to recover; at worst, Trump’s ravages may prove fatal to America’s democratic experiment,

In the aftermath of 9/11, the U.S. made an enormous effort to track down and punish Osama bin Laden his followers.

But, despite all the brave words in the aftermath of the capital invasion, about prosecuting or removing Trump from office, Donald Trump, and the likes of Rudolph Giuliani, Ted Cruz, Fox News, and the army of elected representatives and government officials who enabled Trump over the years, will probably never be punished.

Indeed, there are those who still fear that the last four years will just be Donald Trump’s first term as president.

The Crisis Of Liberal Democracy--Why Now?

The Crisis Of Liberal Democracy--Why Now?

We are witnessing a stunning decline of liberal democracy around the globe—the hollowing out of the center, the rise of the radical fringes, of populism of authoritarian Trump-like leaders who feed on know-nothing views. We’re talking not just across Europe, but on every continent, from Turkey, to Russia, to India, Venezuela and Brazil.

Why is this phenomenon happening now? Some say it’s because of the growing gap between the rich and the poor, the market collapse of 2008, a universal disgust with traditional politics and politicians.

All those factors are at play. But I would argue that the principle cause for the collapse of traditional politics is the astonishing rise of the Internet and social media.

George H.W. Bush : the disastrous legacy of Iraq

The media has been filled today with tributes to the late President George H.W. Bush. He is portrayed as a smart, pragmatic leader, who chose wise counsellors like James Baker—very different from his wilful son, George W. Bush, who led the U.S. into a disastrous attack on Iraq in 2013, the most fateful foreign policy blunder ever made by an American leader.

The fact, however, is that it was the blundering of George H. W. Bush and Baker in 1990 that set the stage for George W. Bush’s calamitous move thirteen years later.

Trump's Enablers--An Appalling Parallel

Trump's Enablers--An Appalling Parallel

We went to a very moving commemoration in London this week marking the 80th anniversary of Krystallnacht-- when thousands of German Jews were rounded up and sent to concentration camps. The opening salvo, as it were, of the Holocaust. But what I found most appalling–because of its relevance to today’s headlines --was not the description of those horrific events, but the motivation of a top Nazi official responsible for carrying out Hitler’s genocidal commands.

Pittsburgh and America's deeply embedded anti-semitic past.

Reading the horrified reactions to the bloody attack on the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, one has the impression that the assault was carried out by a crazed individual operating from the most deranged fringe of America’s alt-right: a product of the brutal politics of Donald Trump and social media run amok. The fact is that, though America would dearly love to forget it, anti-Semitism has long been deeply embedded in the U.S.

Trump's Treason-What's Next?

Trump's Treason-What's Next?

Donald Trump stands accused of “treason” after his outrageous summit with Vladimir Putin. Those startling charges are no longer coming from the political fringes, but from mainstream politicians, officials, and the press. Despite the gravity of the situation, craven Republican leaders still refuse to act. Is the only option to hope for the best in the November congressional elections, while leaving a treasonous leader in charge of the world’s most powerful nation?

There is another path, a harrowing one, but one that might ultimately be the only way out for America. I describe it in my novel “Deep Strike” –the tale of a corrupt, dysfunctional American president, Walter Stokes, elected with the help of Russian hacking. The book was published a year ago, but it could never be more relevant.

Fiction as Strange as Truth-"Deep Strike"

Like most works of fiction, this is one that began with a “what if.”

What if, I wondered after the last presidential race, what if a small handful of CIA agents who investigated Russian hacking, were outraged by the blatant interference in America’s democratic process?

What if those agents were infuriated by the unwillingness of congressional leaders to react to their findings, and further inflamed by the refusal of the new president to acknowledge that the hacking had even taken place?

What if they were scandalized by the fact thatAmerica’s intelligence agencies and colossal military force would now be under the command of that same new feckless leader?

What if, pushed to the breaking point by the death of a colleague, three of those agents go rogue to take on the President and all his vast powers, and attempt to drive him from office?

To write this fiction, I made use of voluminous news reports about the U.S. and Russia, accounts of America’s vast intelligence apparatus that the president controls. I received valuable input from a plastic surgeon, from an expert on Moscow, from hackers and cyber professionals.

But the characters in this novel – their backgrounds, their thoughts and words and interactions – are all invented. The crimes and corruption my agents uncover, the climactic ending to their struggle, are all spun from my own imagination.

It’s all fiction. It never happened.

But could it?

"Deep Strike" is now  available on Amazon as an ebook and soft cover. It is also available at all local book stores on demand. If you like it, appreciate if you would also consider writing a brief review on Amazon.
